description: Connected GE Kitchen …
GE Lighting has created an LED table lamp, the first-ever light source embedded with Amazon’s Alexa. Amazon’s Alexa get’s a sleek new home in this GE light fixture as part of their efforts to increase the number of connected appliances.
The voice-controlled table lamp has microphones and a speaker, so that a homeowner can simply say “lights on” or “lights off” to control the lighting, as well as give it additional Alexa commands, such as asking about the latest headlines or asking about the weather. We also talk about GE’s new Alexa concept light. (We think it’s strange-looking).
We’ve broken things down based on the different brands and ecosystems that each have their own compatibility with smart lights and smart switches that you’ll ultimately be able to control via Alexa on your Amazon Echo.
At the same time you get a wonderful light source, a table lamp,” said Jeff Patton, general manager of Connected Home Products for GE Lighting. GE debuted the first stand-alone LED table lamp embedded with Amazon Alexa Voice Service. The futuristic glow of GE’s new LED table lamp embedded with Amazon’s Alexa.
Amazon’s Alexa voice commands now work with any of GE’s wifi-enabled appliances. GE Appliances has partnered with Amazon to add Alexa skill sets to its WiFi connected appliances. While you shouldn’t turn down anyone who offers to help with vegetable prep or the dishes this Thursday, know that GE Appliances has added a few additional commands to the Alexa skill set that make it even more convenient for Thanksgiving prep. Meet Geneva, the unique character created by GE Appliances and Monogram for the built-in Alexa skill set. The Alexa skill for GE Appliances, dubbed Geneva, makes it possible for you to do everything from heating up water for your tea or coffee to asking the dishwasher how much longer it has to go in a cycle with just a simple voice command.
“We believe that voice is the most natural and convenient user interface, and the new GE LED lamp with Alexa makes it easy for customers to not only control smart devices throughout their homes, but also do things like listen to music, check the daily news or request a ride – using only their voice,” Aaron Brown, director of Amazon Alexa, told Mashable. Amazon Alexa made another surprise entrance to the tech market when the voice controlled technology behind all Amazon products finds its way in the newest smart lamp device of General Electric (GE).
Consider all the other devices Amazon wants to imbue with Alexa voice controls, from thermostats and light bulbs to smart TVs and connected cars. Once connected and discovered by Echo, you can control the dimmer with voice commands using the name you have given the dimmer, such as “Alexa, turn Kitchen Light on” or “Alexa, set Entry Light to 30%”.
There are currently more than 3,000 Alexa skills available, such as ordering an Uber pickup or adjusting the lights with smart bulbs.
The WeMo Light Switch can be used to replace any light switch in your home, letting you schedule and control your lights and appliances without the need of a central hub. The LED table lamp is an extension of the C by GE series which includes a set of lightbulbs controllable with a smartphone app. Though Google, Amazon and other consumer electronics companies have turned towards the automated and tech-enabled home, GE may have the advantage of a pre-existing catalogue of home appliances. Homeowners can ask Amazon’s Alexa and her new GE counterpart “Geneva” to set the oven timer or start the dishwasher.
Geneva launched in September of this year and is the first Alexa skill set from the company to control a broad range of kitchen appliances, including refrigerators, dishwashers, wall ovens, ranges, laundry and more. This isn?t the first time an appliance manufacturer has promised deep Alexa integration.
Thanks to Alexa’s compatibility with a variety of smart light systems, you’ve got several great options for automating and customizing your home. Alexa’s a pretty cool invention, right? Amazon’s virtual assistant tells jokes, dims your living room lights, and responds to famous Star Wars quotes.
GE Appliances has added new skills in time for Thanksgiving, including tailored turkey oven temperatures and meat probe settings. Transform any home into a smart home with the GE Z-Wave Smart Lighting Control Fluorescent Light and Appliance Module. We believe that voice is the most natural and convenient user interface, and the new GE LED lamp with Alexa makes it easy for customers to not only control smart devices throughout their homes, but also do things like listen to music, check the daily news or request a ride using only their voice,” Aaron Brown, director of Amazon Alexa, told Mashable. I have some wall lights that have switches on both ends of the steps in our house and I plan to set the main GE on/off switch for a “dusk-to-dawn” application.
The Nest also has its own developer program, Works with Nest, which integrates the company?s thermostat and other products directly with a long and growing list of devices including smart lights, appliances, locks, cars, shades, and garage door openers. We kicked off the show talking about the recent hack of the Philips Hue light bulbs and then covered the Nest appliance news.
The bridge enables you to control your lights from your smart device via the Philips Hue App. Add Hue accessories or connect to Alexa to control your lights your way. 2nd Generation starter kit comes with brighter bulbs (upgraded from 600 to 800 lumens) and more internal storage for lighting scenes.
You can now use Alexa, Amazon’s virtual assistant, to voice control Wi-Fi-enabled GE appliances, the manufacturer announced on Tuesday. This isnt the first time an appliance manufacturer has promised deep Alexa integration. [xyz-ihs snippet=”Amazon-Affiliate-Native-Ads”]
When you want to use Echo Dot, simply say the wake word, “Alexa,” and Dot lights up and streams audio to the cloud, where the Alexa Voice Service is leveraged to recognize and respond to your request instantly.
Although Amazon first announced Alexa’s availability for third-party devices in mid-2015, you can count on one hand the number of products that take advantage–including an intercom, a smartwatch, and a jumbo-size tablet. (GE also just announced an Alexa-enabled desk lamp, available next year.) That Jetsons-like future is coming courtesy of a new GE lamp that has Amazon’s Alexa Voice Service–the company’s voice-controlled digital assistant that can answer questions, play music, and perform many other tasks–embedded directly within it.
Everything you need to start your smart home. Control, automate and monitor your home from anywhere using the SmartThings app. Connect compatible appliances, lights, speakers, locks, cameras, thermostats, sensors, appliances and more. SmartThings works with products from Samsung, Amazon, Bose, Schlage, Yale, Cree, Osram Lightify, Honeywell, First Alert, and more. As I mentioned, SmartThings connects to smart door locks, lighting, home security systems, garage door openings, thermostats, light switches, dimmers, outlets, sensors, speakers, appliances, smoke detectors, doorbells, and select valves.
With these, you can monitor whether doors, windows, cabinets, or your garage are open/closed; monitor movement in your home; and have the ability to control lights, electronics, and small appliances.
GE Link, much like Philips Hue, gives you the ability to control your lights from anywhere. The company operates through eight segments: Power & Water, Oil & Gas, Energy Management, Aviation, Healthcare, Transportation, Appliances & Lighting and GE Capital.
Manage lights, locks, appliances, and more all from a central location.
You could use it very much as you might use an Echo or Dot today in any room in your home to activate the Alexa service. “Lighting is something we use day in and day out, and when you look at how you use it and when you want to use it, there is a lot of basic automation built in already, with Christmas lights going on and off outside of a home. GE began developing the product earlier this year because the smart home market continues to grow, with a three-fold increase expected by 2020, said Tom Stimac, chief innovation officer for GE Lighting. This is the first of what GE expects to be many smart home products that they will develop, with others debuting as early as the first quarter of 2017. Patton said this is just the first of what will be many smart home products that GE develops.
“This introduction is the first in a suite of connected products we?re incubating to create simple, connected experiences that elevate what you can do at home,” Jeff Patton, general manager of connected home products for GE Lighting told Mashable. Digital industrial design company GE is moving forward to create a line of intelligent home products that will provide consumers a suite of tools and customization options. The newest smart LED lamp, the latest addition of the product in the C by GE series, comes with almost everything that Amazon Echo offers. GE, which announced the new “C by GE” desktop lamp on Wednesday, says the illuminator is just the first in a series of connected products to come.
Alexa, Amazon?s voice assistant technology, is branching out from its first home, the Echo series of devices, and finally starting to show up in third-party products. Alexa syncs right up to the Philips Hue Bridge, which means you’ll be able to set up different lighting groups for your rooms and IFTTT recipes on your phone, then also control everything with the sound of your voice via your Amazon Echo. Control your home’s lighting using Alexa and these smart bulbs. Connect your Smart Bridge to Alexa allows you to control all the dimmers and switches with your voice. WeMo offers Wi-Fi enabled smart switches and outlets that you can control via Alexa. You can use the Insteon app to set bulbs into groups for scheduling and creating scenes, then take control via Alexa.
Don’t just update the look of your home — upgrade its functionality, then let Alexa control it all with the power of your own voice. WiFi Connect Use your voice to control your refrigerator with Amazon Alexa.
It is the first Alexa-connected lamp that does not need another third-party hub to work or control other smart-home devices that work with the ever-growing list of Alexa Skills. Alexa lamp is a stand-alone device that does not need another unit, smartphones, switch or hubs to operate.
Amazon offers an affordable way to start building out a voice-activated home automation system for your house or apartment with their Amazon Echo and Echo Dot powered by their A.I. assistant, Alexa. Homeowners working in the kitchen can now ask Alexa, the voice who “lives” inside the automated Amazon Echo system, to assist with tasks around the kitchen, such as preheating the oven, checking the internal temperature of a meat while cooking with an integrated meat probe, or starting the dishwasher, all with a simple voice command.
Things get really interesting when you start to connect Alexa up to smart devices, including connected LED bulbs and smart switches, around your house. The first product in the series is an LED table lamp that integrates Amazon’s voice-controlled Alexa platform into the design.
This is the first lighting device to embed Amazon Alexa voice technology. If you’re living in an apartment and are just looking to control some funky lighting options via Alexa voice controls, Philips Hue is your best bet.
You’ll need a to get started, but from there you can connect plug-in smart switches for appliances, lamps and outdoors, and in-wall dimmers which support dimmable LED and CFL technologies along with legacy support for incandescent, halogen, Mark 10, and magnetic lighting loads. This one is better for the DIYers out there who are interested in manually creating their own home automation network with in-wall switches and plug-in adapters to control lamps and other small appliances.
Other Alexa-powered devices like Echo do support Smart Home Devices, but perhaps GE’s system will enable more expansive control. While still in development, the final C by GE lamp will offer the equivalent brightness of a 60-watt bulb and should be between 14-18 inches tall and about 13 inches in diameter. Right now there’s no release date, but GE expects the lamp to ship sometime in late 2017. According to GE, it is a lamp that response, speaks and makes life easier. In October, GE integrated Amazon’s Dash Replenishment feature into their dishwashers. Although its price has not been disclosed yet, GE said that it will be less than the price range of Amazon Echo, which is about $180.
Whether you’re looking for 60W equivalent white LED bulbs, bulbs that feature 16 million colors, or LED light strips for futuristic accents, There’s a reason why so many people have gone with Philips Hue. There’s a lot of fun to be had here, as Philips Hue lights can be synced up to your music for epic dance parties, and otherwise customized in countless different ways to suit your lifestyle.
Seconded! I have tried a lot of the different bulbs and LIFX are great, they have the best Android App and really good light bulbs. Maybe they skipped Wink because they don’t make their own light bulbs but I would agree that Wink should be talked about a bit more.
The unusual-looking lamp was designed, in part, by Richard Clarkson who may be best known for his cloud lamp, which is essentially a whimsical, hanging cloud light fixture that can produce storm-like effects on your ceilings and walls.
SmartThings provides a full suite of options for home automation, which includes a few options for smart lights. If you’re mainly interested in smart lights, you can get a SmartThings Hub and an Osram bulb bundle.
Fantastic bulbs, work great with Alexa and no hub required. Whether she’s controlling smart home devices or answering a scientific question, Alexa plays a crucial role in day-to-day routines and activities. Amazon?s Alexa lets users ask general questions, control smart devices, make shopping lists, play games, stream music and more. Homeowners can say things like, “Alexa, tell Geneva to preheat my oven for turkey,” “Alexa, tell Geneva to set the oven timer for 10 minutes,” or “Alexa, ask Geneva when the dishwasher will be finished.” With Amazon Alexa, the LED-filled circular tube with a tiny gray base table lamp can take your commands through a microphone and speaker hidden within its base. On its own, you can use Alexa to play music and find news, sports and other information. Need that hot water, but not right away? Say, “Alexa, tell Geneva to make hot water for coffee in 15 minutes.” This is another ambitious leap of Alexa in gadget architecture after its successful outing with Amazon Echo and Echo Dot. Looking a little like a silver Amazon Echo with a glowing ring attached to it, the C lamp integrates the Alexa voice service and backs it up with a microphone array and speakers.
These integrations, powered by the Works with Nest program, range from enhancing the Nest learning algorithm?s data points to using the Nest as an occupancy sensor for triggering other devices (such as Philips Hue light bulbs or WeMo smart switches, so your lights turn off when your Nest sets to Auto-Away), to allowing these systems to control your heating and cooling set points. The Ecobee3, Ecobee 3 Lite and Honeywell Lyric (released January 2016) are all HomeKit compatible, and can communicate with other HomeKit devices to create scenes such as “I?m Home,” to trigger your thermostat to set to your desired temp and your HomeKit-compatible lights to come on. Because many devices that connect to Nest use Away mode as their trigger, switching to Away mode when you are home could shut off your lights and lock your doors.
Alexa, Amazons voice assistant technology, is branching out from its first home, the Echo series of devices, and finally starting to show up in third-party products. It has the same, somewhat finicky touchscreen, and you control it in the same way: on the device itself, through your phone, tablet, or computer with Ecobee?s app or Apple?s Home app, or by voice with Apple?s Siri or Amazon?s Alexa. Just be prepared to manually adjust the temperature on a regular basis if you are using any of the smart integrations (such as Alexa or Siri), because this model?s lack of an occupancy sensor means it has no way of returning to its programmed schedule unless you tell it to through the app or the device itself. This budget version of the Ecobee3 lacks the remote sensors and occupancy sensors of its predecessor but retains the programming and scheduling features, and like the main Ecobee3, it works with a variety of smart-home systems, including HomeKit, Alexa, SmartThings, Wink, and IFTTT. However, the lack of an occupancy sensor means you?ll have to manually revert it to its prescheduled state anytime you use Alexa, Siri, or any other integration to change its temperature. If you use Siri, Alexa, or anything other than the thermostat or the official app to adjust the temperature of the Ecobee3 Lite, that change overrides your preprogrammed schedule and puts your system into an “indefinite hold.”
The Ecobee3 Lite isn?t smart on its own, but its integration with Apple?s HomeKit, IFTTT, Amazon?s Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and Wink can provide some of the smarts of the Ecobee3 and the Nest. Ecobee3 is compatible with IFTTT, Wink, Samsung SmartThings, Amazon?s Alexa, Control4, and Vera, as well as with a number of other smart-home devices.
All of the thermostats we tested work with one or more smart-home hubs such as SmartThings and Wink, or within a Web-enabled ecosystem like Amazon?s Alexa or IFTTT (If This Then That). The system works in the same way Alexa does, and it?s actually a little more pleasant to use than shouting across the room. I use alexa echo and smarthings to controll it via voice comand. Orders can be place through Amazon?s proprietary Echo, Echo Dot, Tap, Fire HD tablet or Fire TV devices by saying “Alexa, order a.,” and purchases of $10 or more made now through Cyber Monday (Nov. 28) will also earn a $5 Amazon gift card. Amazons Alexa lets users ask general questions, control smart devices, make shopping lists, play games, stream music and more. Amazon Fire TV Stick w/ Alexa Voice Remote ( $29.99, SAVE $10 ) Put apps like Netflix and Hulu on almost any TV, and get easy-to-use voice control and the Amazon Alexa smart home personal assistant, too.
Ecobee 3 Thermostat with Sensor (works with Amazon Alexa) ( $198.99, SAVE $50.01 ) This top-rated smart thermostat comes with an extra sensor and can be programmed from your phone. Connecting the Cor to Wink also allows you to control it with Amazon?s Echo through Alexa. You can speak commands to Alexa, Echo?s personal assistant, to adjust your climate control.
This introduction is the first in a suite of connected products were incubating to create simple, connected experiences that elevate what you can do at home, Jeff Patton, general manager of connected home products for GE Lighting told Mashable. Take control of your home lighting with GE Z-Wave Smart Lighting Controls.
GE, which announced the new C by GE desktop lamp on Wednesday, says the illuminator is just the first in a series of connected products to come. You will also need to purchase the GE add-on switches to use for your 3 or 4 way switches. Unfortunately, you need to use the GE add-on switch for this type of application. If radios aren’t your thing, then delve into the details of connected lights and new features with Amazon Echo and Google Home. In my video about the smart garage door opener, I showed you a robot that turns on my garage light when the garage door opens. Decided to add this switch and three add on switches to control my outside security lights from each bedroom and my Vera controller. I believe you can add up to 5 add on switches to control lights from many locations. The add on switches merely communicate via pulses on the “traveller” to turn light(s) on or off. You can easily turn the lights on and off with the paddle style switch. Kevin Tofel and I mentioned security but then dove into a discussion of the new HomeKit-enabled Bluetooth light switch from Elgato, the new tricks from the Amazon Echo and a few chip stories.
The new display comes with a rather unexciting feature named Farsight; previously the Nest lit up when it sensed you were in front of it, but now it can light up when you are a little farther away. “Voice shopping with Alexa takes the hassle out of the holidays, giving customers the ability to order from millions of items simply by saying the word.” All this could change now that Amazon is partnering with Conexant, a maker of voice processor chips and software, on a development kit for Alexa devices. The company says it’s the first time Amazon’s Alexa Voice Service has been used within a lighting product, allowing users to ask questions and control a connected home. Tyler Lizenby/CNET You’re oiling down your Thanksgiving turkey, and the recipe you’re using calls for you to adjust the oven temperature right before you put the turkey in. products that works with Alexa, Amazon’s virtual assistant. Want to turn off the fan? Turn on the floor lamp? Shut off the TV in the kids’ room before their brains melt? When Wemo and Alexa work together, all you have to do is speak your mind.
If you just want to turn on or off another light in response to a double or triple tap, and you don’t need the hold functionality, it may be easiest just to use the SmartLighting stock app to control your other lights instead of the button controller app, but either approach should work well. In order to have the multi-tap function control another set of lights, the switch that controls the lights does not need to also be a WD100+; It only needs to be switch that has been paired or controllable via your SmartThings hub. The other lights triggered by double/triple tap need to have their own network switch that uses a protocol your controller supports, such as Z-Wave, Zigbee, Wifi etc. Assuming your controller supports these scene events, you’ll need to define the specific remote actions to take place for these devices in the controller rules/event engine. Visit IFTTT.com to find “recipes” for making Wemo turn lights on and off based on real-world events, send you push notifications about device activity, or take advantage of your phone’s geo-fencing capabilities to know if you’re home or away. Why come home to a dark house? Schedule your stuff however you’d like: Set the porch light to turn on before you get home. Rated 5 out of 5 by km48 from Love It! I use this to turn on a light for my pooch if I’m not at home. Wemo is home automation the easy way: Wemo Light Switch seamlessly replaces your old wall light switch and works with any one-way connection light. Works with Nest Thermostat, so your lights will “know” if you’re out of the house, and can turn on or off as you wish. Update 26-September-2016 : The WD100+ device handler has been updated to support preference options for ramp rate configuration, switch reversal, as well as an option to turn the light on full brightness following a double-tap action. The device has a built-in microphone and speaker, enabling its owner to give oral command to control the light. Connect Wemo with an Amazon Echo, Tap or Dot to control your lights and ceiling fans with voice commands.
Second thing I wanted to know in order to use the multi tap functions like double tap and it would turn on or off another set of lights in the same room or different room. A simple use case for these switches might be to turn on your porch light with a single press, include pathway lighting with a double tap, and also include flood lighting with a triple tap. I know everyone it different, but since other family members and houseguests usually interact with light switches, these devices tend to be somewhat more personal than other tech devices, and in my experience, family acceptance factors come into play for quite a lot of people. The reason I’m looking for this is that we just moved out of a house where I had converted all the lights over to z-wave/x-10, and my family has insisted that they don’t want that done in the new house, unless I can find switches that “act like normal switches”. Figured I could add a WD100+ for one of the switches in the foyer to do multitap or a hold which would trigger the dining room lights. It is nice to be in my family room and when I want to watch a movie I can switch the light off easily with a simple tap on the Wemo app. Plus there is connectivity with Amazon ECHO. You can speak the command. Wemo Light Switch seamlessly replaces your old, boring light switch, giving you control of any one-way connection light directly from your phone, wherever you are in the world. Whether you want to turn on a light from your kitchen, front yard, or office, Wemo Switch has you covered. Cause the way it is now you have to walk through the room in the dark to turn on the light or walk completely around the house and come in through the notched to turn on the light. Since it only has one light switch for the room which I thought was stupid. One of the main objectives I would like to be able to do is my light on the dining room.
There’s a Wemo for every situation: Light Switches for your porchlight or those swanky recessed ceiling lights in the man-cave. Rated 4 out of 5 by Chuck58 from Very stable, iPhone wifi and cloud connection I have 4 Wemo wall and one light switch.
Users of Amazon Echo’s smart speaker can now tell its built-in assistant Alexa to handle your text messages. “For us, the magic is to offer this portfolio, so that when other decide to add Alexa to their device, it should not be for the lack of Amazon working with that partner that they were not able to do that,” she says. “This basically will make it easier for device manufacturers to enter Alexa into their products, by providing a good-quality, cost-effective reference solution.”
Of course, Alexa isn’t the first virtual assistant to send texts via voice command. The voice processor inside the Alexa developer kit has been available for about a year, but Conexant president Saleel Awsare says the company has now fine-tuned the microphone placement and voice recognition algorithms for Alexa, which should help separate voice commands from music and background noise.
That’s not to say Conexant’s development kit will address all potential Alexa products. Amazon is aiming to put its Alexa virtual assistant pretty much anywhere. While it’s the first carrier to enable SMS through Alexa, workarounds have previously made texting possible. When I ask Awsare if Conexant’s development kit work might eventually benefit Amazon’s rivals, he says the focus is really on Alexa. Sending texts is possible with automation service IFTTT via a “recipe,” or a string of code that connects Android SMS to Alexa.
AIFA introduced i-Ctrl which can command all traditional home appliances via a smartphone app. This is possible because of a new Alexa “Skill” (sort of like an app for Alexa that connects the platform’s voice. Even for the devices that have arrived, hardware makers haven’t received much guidance on the challenging task of supporting Alexa voice commands from across the room–rather than by making users push a button on the device–so for the most part they haven’t bothered.
Amazon is also working on other ways to speed Alexa’s adoption.
The WD100+ dimmer performed similarly to the GE 12724 dimmer, with no flickering or noticeable hum when used with a dimmable LED bulb. The LED dim level indicator, instant-on, and double/triple press and hold functions worked well in my testing and are welcome additions to the GE capabilities, at an only slightly higher price-point. The fixture always works fine with the GE Z-Wave 12724 dimmer. If you don’t care for the GE switch look & feel, or the ~400ms delay on the physical relay of the on/off switch, these may not be quite what you are looking for, and you may be more interested in the Cooper Aspire, Leviton, or other offerings in the Z-Wave In-Wall Switch Comparison Table.
